Post VHF/AIS

In the process of updating my navigation package and I would like to update my VHF radio as well. I have all Raymarine equipment. What are your thoughts on VHF with a see only AIS or a VHF with a separate See and be seen AIS? I realize that not everybody uses AIS. However it has been a great safety feature in aircraft (TCAS) for a number of years by adding another layer of protection against collision. Because of its more limited maritime use is it worth the extra money? How many people out t ...

Post Line and Net Cutter Systems

Hey Folks. I am wondering if any of you have one of the line and net 'cutter systems' installed on you boat which help protect your running gear from fouling.
It seems to me that they can be very advantageous, although over the past many years of boating, I have only fouled my gear twice. First a lobster pot and second time a mooring line. The difference nowadays is that I am in no hurry to have to dive below and cut the stuff off of the shaft and prop.
Any thoughts?

Post 396 & Erie Canal

Has anyone traveled the Erie Canal in a 396? Air Draft is over 18' but I think there is a bridge that is ~15 and change. Is this correct?

Post Cooktop replacement

My original Princess Ceran 3-burner cooktop has one defective burner and would like replace it with an induction cooktop. The existing cutout is 21.75” wide and 19” deep with a 120VAC input.

I’m hopeful that someone else has taken this on as I’m finding a hard time locating a comparable sized induction cooktop that is 120V. I found one un8t by True Induction but it requires two separate 15amp outlets as it has two cords and won’t operate with both cords plugged into the same duplex outlet.

Post Bilge Pump

Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum but here it goes....

While reworking my water holding tanks etc. I moved my bilge pump forward a bit to where the water settles naturally in my 3697. In doing so I noticed that the Automatic function of my bilge pumps don't seem to be working properly which leads me to ask you all:

Shouldn't the bilge pump, when not in the continuous position, power the pump via the float (or water sensor if equipped)? My helm switch turns the pump on in both positions as ...

Post Windlass maintenance - cleaning

I am taking apart my maxwell freedom 800 windlass for preventive maintenance. I’m also replacing the pressure arm. My question is, what is the top of the windlass made of? I would like to polish out some of these blemishes, but I’m afraid that I’m going to go through the chrome plating.

Ps. The surface is smooth and all blemishes seam to be below the surface.
