Kohler 6.5 genset issue

1991 era Kohler 6.5. Cranks easily, runs smoothly for about 40 minutes under load, then dies. Will re-crank immediately and run for about 10-12 minutes, then shuts down. good waterflow, good oil level. any ideas? thanks in advance.

Not sure of you model. If you have an ESV with a Honda engine, high water temp, high exhaust temp, or low oil pressure could shut it down. Also a fuel delivery problem could be the culprit with any engine. The Honda also has an anti diesel solenoid that actually cuts off all air flow, the solenoid, connector to the solenoid or the control board could be the cause.

If it spits and sputters before dying I would look at the fuel system. If it shuts down instantly, I would look at the safeties, checking the water flow first. The exhaust hose should be warm not hot to the touch when running.

Thanks, it's a 6.5CZ. When it shuts down, it shuts down cleanly. when you crank it back up, it cranks easily and runs smoothly. no spit nor sputter.

Look at some of the other Kohler posts on here. I believe Viper posted a service manual for the CZ.

Thanks. I've searched several forums and read hundreds of generator posts, Most seem to be associated with "it only runs while I hold the start switch", haven't seen anything that sounds like my issue. Found several Kohler service manuals but nothing specifically for the 6.5CZ. I feel like it is one of the safety's that is shutting it down, just have to spend some more time with it.

I think you are on the right track with one of the safety's causing your issue. Mike

If its a high exhaust temp or high coolant temp your not moving enough water. When these fail, they fail to ground on most models. The high exhaust would be quicker to reset than the high coolant temp, I would start there.

Could be a number of things; one of the sensors noted above is failing, control board failing, run relay, generator not outputting, fuel delivery issue including vapour lock, puel pump/pressure regulator, anti-dieseling solenoid, spark plugs, coil failure, etc.

In the service manual below, go to the troubleshooting section and check the "Generator shuts down by itself" section. I believe there's also a section on how to diagnose the control board. Keep us posted....

I would check the strainer first, then if clean check oil pressure and water temp sending units. Sounds like water temp may be getting high and cutting off automatically.
