ProMariner Zinc saver opinions

Our recently purchased 2006 Carver 36MY has a Promariner zinc saver system installed , but its been deactivated by P.O.

Before I chase down all the why's, can I get comments on from those who may have installed/used one and the pro'c/con's. Is there certain conditions where it's detrimental?

I went to the Promariner website. The pitch sounds like a win/win, but what has been the real world experience, especially from those in the PNW area, as we are currently moored in Puget Sound.

Looking forward to the feedback.

Near as I can tell all the Carvers for quite some time have come with them factory installed in each AC power feed to the boats panel. I think given your situation, test the ones you have, and get a marine electrician to check to see if there is something someone was covering up. Also that is the green safety ground to supply for the boats power.Something to be checked for sure. Seem odd.
I my opinion they are well worth it if you are connected to shorepower, here is a good read and many more on the right side of the page may answer a ton of questions......good luck ....

Edit..... Added an after thought about the ground.

Not very familiar with zinc savers but I believe it is similar to a Mercruiser Mercathode system. Bottom line they help reduce galvanic corrosion. That being said and seeing you have a 2006 model year do you not have an isolation transformer? I believe this is the best protection possible and therefor nothing else is required. Reason I ask is mine is a 2007 and has a Charles Isolation Transformer. Here is a description. http://www.charlesindustries.com/main/ma_iso_boost.html

We are having a "twin" Bridgeport Magnetics Isolation Transformers installed, removing to the ProMarine Zinc saver.

Thes Marine-Pucks are toroidal (ring shaped) isolation transformers fully embedded in solid epoxy resin inside a cup-shaped non-metallic enclosure. They are sealed hermetically and can be mounted onto a deck or a bulkhead.

There are many advantages of toroidal transformers versus conventional laminated types.
They are up to 50% lighter and much smaller.
They are quiet. No annoying hum when on shore power.
Marine-Pucks are double-insulated (class II devices) not referenced to ground in any way.
They can be adapted to boost output voltage to compensate for drops and fluctuations caused by long dock-runs or in marinas with 208V rather than normal 240V service.
Marine-Puck are available in standard and automatic boost models (B suffix).
B models automatically select boost in case of low input voltage. They include a separate control unit with a non-metallic enclosure measuring 5” x 5” x 7”. Weight 4 lbs.

The MP3.6KVA unit is 10" OD x 5"high and weighs 45lbs

Thanks again for all the feedback!

Bridgeport Magnetics group started out manufacturing numerous transformers for Medical applications before venturing into the marine market.
