1999 CARVER 445 REFRIGERATOR REPLACEMENT

Post by Alastair MacGregor »

So the 25 year old fridge has died. In order to replace it I'm going to have to remove the main entry door (Hatch). I appears to be pretty straight forward. does anyone have any experience with this? Anything I should be aware of or mistakes to avoid?
Thanks

Hi, we had a 1989 4207, which is similar to you 445 I think. Did you measure the fridge with the doors off? The fridge might make it thru the entry door without the fridge doors.

Have you done this yet? On my 406 they removed the whole door frame and doors to get a fridge in, it has never been the same. But, in my measuring the opening, I see that if the doors are removed, you can remove the top hatch, and drop the fridge straight down into the salon. Food for thought. [image]

I have a 456 motor yacht, year 2000, probably numerous similarities to your boat. Original fridge and freezer (separate units) sat on top of each other in galley. I replaced with a household 7.5 cubic ft refrigerator a few years back and run it by solar. The new technology in refrigeration results in far less power required to operate compared to the units originally installed on these boats.
Because of the size of new unit I was able to carry it right in thru doorway to aft deck and doorway to salon. I found it on sale in Home Depot Canada, $400. Far less than typical marine refrigeration. The overall dimensions of new unit were smaller than the originals so I was able to build a cupboard on top and 5 inch shelves down the side for storing trays and baking sheets.
I’m out of country otherwise I would include photos. It’s stainless steel and look great. No problems for three years now.
Something to consider.

All the best
