If you are referring to the underside of the table top itself, ours was like that too, but I think it was an attempt to help secure it better....the table top seems to take a fair load from the sides causing the screws to loosen.I repaired ours with a larger spacing block then glued it with construction adhesive and big screws. I guess if you take that into account when making a new one you will be fine...we will see.......
