Re: Buying 32 convertable
We bought a 1985 Carver 3227 Convertible about a month ago as our family boat to cruise around in and love it!
She got a full survey 2 years ago which we took as good since the previous owner never apparently used the boat for the last 2 years.
My wife and I have taken this as a DIY project so working our way through the boat for the season taking out and rebuilding sections of the boat.
Just finishing the Vberth after fixing a hatch leak (going to have to replace the clips at some point).
Took down and replaced the headliner and carpeting and foam; also replaced the wallpaper with nice new paint and PVC trim. Removed the 80s lights with LEDs (might still replace those with something nicer later).
The next project is we stripped the head (had a broken Solenoid Value the first time we tried to use the head and got water everywhere) down to the hull and are in the process of adding a new sink and shower lines likely with PEX tubing and I just replaced the Solenoid Value. We're going to either put in fiberglass (bath fitter type) panels or acrylic panels to make the entire head a wet room.
Also just finished tearing out the mid-berth area (previous owner let their dog(s) stay there and the carpet had to be removed and I just finished tearing out, painting with Killz, and replacing the wood to prepare that area.
Going to make it a play area for the child so putting clear plexiglass to see and remove if needed access to the fresh water tanks, water heater, and waste tank. Got rid of the cabinets on the portside and got back about 3-4 foot of space in there and making that port side cabinet a long bench seat.
The floor will be covered with either laminate panels or pergo type wood floor (I have to recut and mount properly the forward bilge pump hatch in there) and the mirrored walls were broken in places so we replaced those with sailrite fabric (TBD on the style at the moment).
The main salon/cabin I'm ripping out the carpet flooring and putting in the faux teakwood cushion floor and we already redid the bench seating.
Next major project is after fixing and remounting the AC I'm ripping out and replacing the power panel with a carbon fiber panel in a steel frame with a glass locking cabinet face to also help me to audit and replace the switches with some newer led rocker switches, digital volt and amp meters.
I am thinking of adding a couple of sender units to the fresh water tanks, and waste tank and putting gauges in the new panel since the main cabin seems to be a better place to tell things like if the fresh water tanks are full or we need to hit the pump out station as the waste tank is full. Any thoughts or has someone done this?
I'll have to post some of the pictures of both when we bought it and the transition or finished sections as we go.
Oh we also started working on the engines and I just replaced the HVAC ducting with insulated 4 inch tubing to help have boat wide cooling and heating. Just finished the main cabin this week going to push through the mid-berth and galley next week.
Hope this info helps someone here.
I've enjoyed going through the forum topics and we've been enjoying our Carver!
Thanks
