I am in the process of buying a 1989 Californian 55 CMY with Detroit 6-92's in the NW. The survey is this Friday. Anything in particular to pay attention to on those boats? Thanks.

The 6-92 is no longer made, but parts are available. The 6-92 was sold primarily as a bus/truck engine and DDA sold a lot of them. You will need to check maintenance records for frequent oil changes, especially if it is the T or TA (turbocharged) version, as heat and oil quality matter more with these engines than the non-turbo engines.

Always check the most recent survey! If there is not one available, it's time.

A good friend of mine has a pair of Detroits in his 44 Ocean and he swears buy them. It would be hard to get to buy a boat without them. He is on top of all the maintenance all the time. Not sure of the model #.

That is a beautiful boat. As with most older Carvers, watch for moisture intrusion on the front deck behind the pulpit. That is a core deck and it can wick back on you, but I am sure the surveyor will have that covered as they know the issues with most boats.

Good luck with your purchase.
