Back up camera

Post by Jay Fusaro »

I’m considering adding a camera to the stern of our 445 to assist in single-handedly getting the boat in the slip. Any recommendations on a camera set up? Thanks in advance.

Nothing specific, but a couple things to think about:

Do any of your MFD's support video? If so, find out if they are "NTSC" video or IP video and that might open up more camera options, and might provide a much larger video display than a stand-alone system. Would also avoid needing another display at the helm that's not used 99% of the time.

Second, depending on where you mount (or what you use) for the monitor, you might consider having the video reversed left-to-right. This would give you the same illusion as looking in a mirror, which might be less confusing to your brain when moving in reverse (similar to when you're in a car).

Excellent idea – thank you! Especially about reversing the video.

I have an opinion - If you look at Garmin the GC-100 wireless is not great as it cuts out when you are around a lot of wireless traffic. Out in open water, it actually works great but backing into a slip, not so much. Also, like I told my dock mate, before drilling any holes, place the camera in the area with a temporary clamp and try it out first. For getting into a slip by backing in, my preference is to have the camera lower toward the water line looking straight back instead of looking down from being mounted to the cockpit top on an aft cabin. Also, better for under way as rear view imho. If I had mine to do over again, I would buy the GC200 Ethernet connected camera to my Garmin 8612vsx. One day, I will buy one and use the wireless GC100 for my Engine room or forward facing on the bow where it is not critical usage.

I have one on my 3297 it's wireless and solar, I bought it on Amazon for my son's car and he didn't want it.
So I got a heavy matt screwed camera to the matt.I hang over transom, the receiver plugs into cigarette lighter on bridge, works great.

I also went the solar/wireless route on mine and used for the first time last weekend. Worked great! Wife’s directions: poor. 7” HD screen and HD cam positioned in the middle to show me both corners and depth to dock: Perfectly clear!! $120 on the Zon and even got a free second cam I can put elsewhere! I agree a hard wired system would have many advantages but this can be removed, re positioned, replaced…all very very easily and inexpensively. At least worth a try.
