2003 Carver 466 and the Great Loop

Postby bryancoxworth » June 26th, 2024, 10:08 pm

I am looking at purchasing a boat for the Greal Loop and one that has caught my eye is a 2003 Carver 466. My concern is bridge clearance. I wondered if anyone has completed the Loop in the 466. The specs say Bridge clearance is 19.5' and the bridge south of Chicago is 19' 1" so I am a little concerned. it does not appear there is any easy way to hinge the arch on this boat. The Champlain Route is even lower and although this would be a route i may never take i was also interested in if anyone has done that route as well. I am not planning to do the Erie so that is a non-issue. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Good luck with your boat purchase. I would join the great loop association and you will find more info on the boats people have looped in. Theres probably been loopers in the carver 466. You can definitely find options on the route if any there. As to height whats on top of the arch? You may can gain some clearance by putting the masthead light on a hinge or radar or whatever.
I was very lucky on my 405. I'm the second owner the original owner ordered this boat from Carver and my arch does hinge down . I ve had to do it a few times for a bridge where I live when we have high water. I don't believe this option was offered very much but I may be wrong.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with G36, joining the AGLCA would be a great idea, boatdiesel.com as well. Good luck with the boat search.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.....
