Maybe dumb question

Postby Plum » April 18th, 2021, 6:50 pm

Anyone know how many people can safely fit on a 1996 carver 355 aft cabin? We are having an engagement party and would like to do a short harbor cruise? I've had 6 people on it last summer (our first year), but we are looking at about 15 this time. Tried to find answers online but feeling like a complete rookie.
I know that we're need 1 life jacket per person but does the coast guard limit how many people?
Thanks for your help.

Pretty sure there is no set figure when boats get to a certain size, Just be careful and enjoy.

You boat has a "yacht certification" so the loading is up to the captain to determine.
Your boat can hold a lot of persons if needed. I don't like to take out more than eight on mine. Not because the boat won't handle it, its just to crowded.
If you have flat water and life jackets for everyone you can legally take 15 people on the boat. I wouldn't let more than six on the bridge.

Just my 2 cents.

Agree with Tom.

When I first got my old 3607, I had the same question. Called all around including to the USCG and the only thing I could come up with was a standard formula that they used for smaller boats. Using that formula I could have had over 28 folks on the boat but that would be REALLY, REALLY crowded!! I have had 12 and 15 on it with no issues. As long as it's not rough, some folks will stay below in the cabin, 4-5 on the aft deck and a few more on the bridge. Having full-size adults on the bridge is really where the issues are going to be.

There are no dumb question regarding boat safety....good on you for realizing this required looking into, the captain ( you ) is legally responsible for everything on board his/her vessel...that is my understanding unless someone knows otherwise.....Good luck with your cruise and stay safe, sounds like a nice thought.
The above is strictly my opinion.

Yep, no more than 6 on the bridge. 3-4 on the bow is ok as long as they stay seated and only move around when the boat is not moving. 4-5 aft deck, 4-6 below....16 is not a problem while idling around the harbor. The captain needs to stay focused with that many people on board and cannot be consuming what his passengers are most likely having.
