2007 Carver Mariner Transom Door

Post by Southern Cross »

The transom door has a latch built into the rail - a round plastic block with a bolt thumb guide and a pin that slides into a recess in the stbd aft rail. The system was damaged beyond repair and I am looking for a replacement door rail with this slide latch. From the parts list I believe the P/N is 6796108. I could replace with an external bolt or hook latch but would like to find a replacement first. Any source suggestions? Thank You.

Any chance you could post a picture. This part probably not carver specific.

Thanks - please see attached. I have tried every hardware company I can think of like Perko, Atwood, Taylor made. Any suggestion would really be appreciated. The rail is closed around the pin. download/file.php?mode=view&id=8206.<a class="postlink" href="download/file.php?mode=view&id=8205

Is that the damaged one or just one that looks like it?

If it's the damaged one, it looks like you're just missing the 'button' or handle to operate it. Might be easier to have one of those made that would work.

If that's just one that looks like it, then you might be able to construct one that would work as good, but just a different operation. Perhaps just a stainless tube slightly larger than the rail tubing that would slide over one part completely, but could be slide over the other part when aligned.

You might try contacting the marine salvage yards around Florida or the east coast periodically to see if they get a Carver in. Check around to see what other Carver models might have used the same design too... perhaps several years and several models around your vintage utilized the same design.

Not the best/cheapest option but looks simple enough for a machine shop to replicate.
Thanks

Here is another view/opinion.....You could just abandon that closure and install a nice stainless latch system like the previous models on the door inside surface.....check some online pics from sale ads for lets say a 2001 mariner or years around there that did not have that railing on the top, just the padding.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Thank You Both, Today, I initiated a possible plan with a machine shop and I agree we could end up with a stainless external latch. I did just launch an inquiry to Southco in hopes.

Seeing as you're in FL, have you tried The Marine Connection Liquidators in Fort Pierce or Don's Marine Salvage in Clearwater? They both have a ton of salvaged railings and rail hardware, you never know!!
