Re: Norcold Frig Parts - free!

Well, I should have followed up on this!! My Norcold bit the dust this week. Something in the power supply went 'poof' and now it just blows fuses.

What's really frustrating is that I still had my 'old' fridge. I had bought a brand new one about 20 years ago. It lasted about 4 or 5 years and died, with a compressor problem. I bought a used one and had been using it ever since. I kept the old one and cut the compressor open. I found a spur on the piston that was causing it to lock up and trimming it down. Tested it and got it to work, but never got it welded back together or refilled with 134.

The seals on the current one on the boat seemed stiff, so JUST YESTERDAY I took the doors off the "old" one that was stored in the garage and brought them to the boat to swap onto the "good" one on the boat, and that's when I found that the fridge wasn't running! ARRRGH!

After some troubleshooting, I figured out that it was the power supply. So I jumped back in the car (during rush hour) and drove home and grabbed the power supply off the spare one and headed back to the boat (2 hr round trip!). There were slight differences in the power supply, so I rechecked the part numbers and the "spare" fridge was a DE-561 and the one on the boat was a DE461. Looking at the schematics, the outputs of the power supplies are the same but they way they get the A.C. for the compressor is a bit different. I hooked it up but couldn't get the compressor to run.

Upon looking closer, when they made the change from the 561 to the 461 (seems weird that the 461 is newer, being a lower model number!), they changed the frequency of the compressor from 60Hz to 50Hz. ARRRRGH! Otherwise, the supply should have worked and got us back on track for the holiday weekend.

Also just found out that the local dry ice place is no longer in business. ARRRGH!! :(

Sent PMs to the folks above to see if they still have any parts sitting around.
