PROPELLER SHAFT DIAMETER FOR 1998 MARINER 350

Postby GREGORYWILHELM » September 1st, 2020, 10:16 am

Salutations,

I have a 1998 Carver 350 MAriner with 350 Mercruiser Engines. I have a 4 bladed propellers.
I just did a new bottom and it appears that the previous owners removed the rope cutters.

QUESTION NUMBER 1:
What is the diameter of the propeller shaft? Inches and/or MM

QUESTION NUMBER 2:
Has anyone used a SALCA propeller rope cutter from SEA SHIELD MARINE?

THIS IS THEIR ADVERTISEMENT:

Dual protection below the waterline
The SALCA (Sacrificial Anode Line Cutter Assembly) is the first unit to combine a sacrificial anode and disc line-cutter to give you dual protection against corrosion and propeller entanglement. By combining an extremely durable stainless steel disc line cutter to our already reliable MIL-SPEC anodes we were able to eliminate the difficult installations and constant maintenance headaches associated with traditional line-cutters. With the SALCA, you get an all-in-one unit that’s easy to install, requires no maintenance, and is made with the highest quality materials.

QUESTION NUMBER 3:
Any other suggestions for a rope cutter?

THANK YOU

Greg

The best thing to do would be call Carver with your hull id #. They have a log for your specific vessel, and will know exactly what size shaft is installed. There is a standard size but sometimes, if certain OEM parts are running low, they would go to another size. Never used a line cutter on my V-drives. Did use one on I/O but they were not 100% effective for fishing line.

Welcome to the forum.......see below, section 14-5 in parts....looks like it may be 1.5"...but always a good idea to double check before acting.

As to the others , sorry can't help with that, no experience with line cutters except flippers , mask and knife.... :-D
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.....

Make sure you actually measure your shafts before ordering anything. My assembly book and parts manual shows 1 1/2" shafts. Mine are actually 1 3/8"
Line cutters were not a standard item and where most likely never on the boat.
I have never used them so cant offer an opinion on what's best.

Haven't seen those on any applications I've dealt with. I'm used to seeing SPURS units. Either way, I recommend physically confirming the shaft size, and you'll need to ensure there is enough clearance between the prop and strut to mount the product. The Salca wouldn't be my first choice but I'm sure the price is right.
