Aft transom window 3807

Postby Gilligan 1955 » August 5th, 2024, 8:39 pm

I recently purchased a 89, 3807. In the survey it was noted that the aft transom window should be replaced with one that opens so it can be used as a second point of escape. Is it possible that the window is made to "pop out" when hit with sufficient force? Really don't want to replace with one that opens thus adding another point for future water leaks.

Surprised something like that showed up in a survey. There are a LOT of very nice mid-cabin boats that only have a single point of egress. The 470 Sea Ray comes to mind but there are numerous other similar examples.

It may just to be the ability to avoid passing the engine compartment on the way out.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.....

Tie a small hammer like you see next to a fire extinguisher with sign on window that says "break in case of emergency.".. :-D

It stated should, not shall. I'd ignore it. I know if I tried to get through a small wind like that, I'd get stuck. I have a much better chance of swimming up and out the stairs.
Lets say you were sleeping back there. Safe to assume tied up in a slip or on anchor. The boat is not going down in any short time. You'll have time to get out.
The surveyor probably feels he has to list something to make it worth your while. I've dealt with x-spurts my entire career. They must justify their pay. (x is an unknown ; a spurt is a drip under pressure)
Thanks

Ya there's recommendations, then there's red flagged must do's. The issue is whether your insurance company is one that will make you act on the recommendations as well as the must do's. If they've already insured you without correcting that recommendation then I wouldn't worry about it unless it bothers you personally for safety reasons.

According to my brother, who was Carver's biggest dealer at the time, that window was indeed intended to be popped out as an emergency exit I had asked him the same question when I bought my 3807).

In my fixed window '92 3307 AC, I keep an 18"x1"dia steel bar lying on the floor next to the bed. We also have 3 fire extinguishers an 2 fire blankets for if there is a fire in the main salon. We also have a fire blanket fwd and 2 extinguishers in the v-berth, 3 more in the galley/main area.
