Portholes

Postby tonyiiiafl » April 7th, 2023, 7:50 pm

Went to replace the leaky portholes forward berth. Started to take apart, and son of a gun I never checked the tightness of the dogs that hold the window shut. I removed them, reset the nut and reinstalled and those window are now tight as heck! Rubber gasket was very pliable, so I am going to take a chance.

Also, uncovered the girl today, tomorrow some more canvas sewing, Sunday a little wax on the bridge areas and install the canvas. Yes, getting pretty close!

Let me ask you and others...
Similar issues...water stain marks...portholes...
Before I start removing screws....
Dozen screws around the porthole ring...if I remove these screws....does that faceplate pull off and then what...the backside plate on the hull...will fall off also unless someone is holding it from dropping???
I've already replaced the screens in each porthole...easy to do.
Now the unsightly water stain marks need sorted...
Is their a gasket behind that oval chrome/12 screws ring??
Where...is the water...usually coming in from??? The screen area itself or getting under the screen and between the porthole mount??

OK, from what I learned. If you remove the screws around the trim ring, the porthole does NOT fall out. The outer trim ring has tabs that come through the hull and are fastened from inside with 6 screws. There's the rubber ring gasket that is what the window seals with. Make sure it is pliable. The water will usually come in from the window not sealing properly against the gasket. Use the dollar bill method. put a dollar bill between gasket and window. lock window and see if dollar bill can be pulled through. I could with little effort pull the dollar through. I removed the screws that hold the dog down. Tightened the inner nut and replaced to the trim ring. now the window pulled in tight against the gasket. I would certainly check that first. Only other issue some have are the rail posts leaking through the topside down.

Now TWO side curtains have the O'Sea replaced. An easier task the second one for

sure. Also, the magic is happening.....uncovered and prepping. The "fitting out" spare bedroom is certainly getting full!
