Rudder shaft repair

Postby Blu3 » December 9th, 2024, 1:44 pm

Hello new to this forum happy to find you guys.
I am trying to prepare parts for a haul out.

I have a 1983 carver 28' mariner with a stuck rudder I believe the bearing or sleeve was damaged when trying to remove the prop laborer said he heard a crack. He used a piece of wood against the rudder to keep the prop from spinning while trying to loosen the prop castle nut.

I found a few parts but I am not sure exactly what my boat needs and before I haul out I want to have parts on hand to avoid wasted lay day fees.

Any help would be appreciated here is what I found so far but not sure what my boat needs.

Not sure about that first one, but the other three seem to have very large holes for the rudder stock. Do you know the diameter of your rudder stock? You should be able to measure it on the inside where the tiller arm attaches. I'd guess it's 1" or 1 1/8".

Yes I can do that.
I've exposed the top of thee rudders and removed the battery box wood.
Loosened the support beam that spans the width of the rudders so I can get to it easily I will measure right now.

I'm surprised it's that large.

Also interesting, that the last one you posted says in the title it's "Carver 1 1/4 Inch", but in the text and the diagrams show 1 3/4" measurement.

Yes those were the only tubes I could find.
I talked to the yard today and they think those are for newer boats.

My rudder tubes have packing glands similar to the prop shafts.

So I'm thinking its just a sleeve that the rudder slides into.

Yea, at the top there would be the packing for that vintage. I just didn't/don't know if there is some kind of bushing at the bottom of the through-hull fitting that would support the rudder shaft

I doubt the the hardware in the pics you posted are correct for your vintage, those are for units on newer vintages that are glassed in place at factory. The type of tube you're looking for is the bronze ones with packing glands like the one in the link bud posted above. A good prop machine shop may have the specs on your particular model and vintage. They're also pretty standard measurements but they will need the rudder shaft size and length of the current tube.

Before buying the tube, you really should inspect your current one first, it may be fine and what you really may need is to straighten is the rudder shaft instead or replace it. If the tube is still perfectly round, the problem may be the shaft, but finding out means a hall out first.

Thank you all for the replies.
I have some direction now at least.
Will let you know how the haul out goes and try to take some pics.
