2000 Carver 506 - AFT carpet soaked

Post by KuyaJunGarage »

Hey guys hope everyone is enjoying the boating season.
Family and I finally took the carver out, Cummins worked flawlessly, open her up to 2400rpm and 17-18 knots..

for the love of me i can't seem to find where the water is coming from, i think it has something to do when i turn the AC on, it gets wet near the corner Port side Aft.
Wondering if any other 506 owners had this issue? Clogged condesation AC line?

Thanks All in Advance

Yes, AC condensation is a possibility. Have you looked at your sump pump to make sure it is operating properly?

Buster, thank you for the reply, i did notice the sump pump is not working and the over flow drain is draining into the bilge. And the bilge pump is pumping it out of the boat.

I don't see an access panel for the rear sump pump accessible like the front.
Is the only way the opening in the above picture of my 1st post and reach from the side?

Five months in owning this boat I'm figuring everything out. I keep second questioning my decision of buying the boat, but its a 25 year old boat, its to be expected.

thanks
KJ

Ok, I have a different boat, a 356. In my aft cabin, I have to pick up the carpeting in order to access several bilge openings including the one to access the sump pump. In the aft cabin, I have no carpet cutouts, that’s why I have to pickup the carpet. My carpet looks identical to yours, a heavy pile and a PITA to pick up. A couple months ago, I got rid of it and replaced it with a thinner, lighter indoor-outdoor carpet that the wife and I actually like even better.

I notice you are in VA…where do you keep your boat?

Also, where is your AC unit? I’m guessing underneath the bed.

Can you tell if the moisture is coming from below or running along the deck from above under the carpet. Seems the bilge is fairly dry from that pic. Is this only apparent now after the boat has gone out and changed angles with the engines running. Water has a habit of getting trapped in areas above and when the angles change makes its way down.

I would peel the carpet back , dry everything then put down some paper towels here and there, monitor to verify where the water is actually coming from as you run the engines with the hatch open.......try it at the dock first....then you can cross them off the list.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I too have a 20+ yr old boat. A 366 which is considerably smaller but finding all the pex water connections are starting to fail one by one. I just had same issue in my aft cabin and first the PO found the dock water attachment was spraying into the interior cabinetry and replaced that. On survey day the water heater connections let loose and just last weekend found the transom shower was now leaking and the water managed to find an interior ledge to travel and get to the carpet and bilge. All three were in or around the aft stateroom. Hope this or the other suggestions help!

Buster - once again thank you for the reply! interesting hopefully my 506 has the same, just pull up the carpet and pray there is a cut out for the floor to get tot he sum pump. AC unit is behind the opposite wall (not under the bed)
holy molly you are too in VA! I'm at Belmont bay Marina (occoquan), you?

Bud37 - thanks for the reply. When i took the boat home from Baltimore 17 hour trip, i recall that carpet area was a little wet figured had a screw from the swim platform needing to be re-caulked. But now i'm noticing since i have been running the AC its gets wet.
Good idea next time i'm at the boat i'm going to peel the carpet back and place newspaper and see where its coming from. I took the mattress off thinking it was coming from under the bed but it was bone dry there.

Geo - thanks for the reply - that was the first placed I took apart that part is bone dry.

Carverlvr2 - Thanks for the reply, these old boats! but i done want monthly payments! Yes being 20+ years i'm afraid some pex fittings are going.

I'm hoping its a clogged condensation line and when i fix my sump pump this goes away.

thank you all and appreciate you guys chiming in.
