Thruster tunnel size 450 Voyager

Post by ck36 »

I plan on replacing my BP1200 thruster and would like to size the replacement prior to haul out. Does anyone know the tunnel diameter for the 450 Voyager? I was considering just replacing the gear box, but when adding up all the costs it looks like replacing it with a new sidepower isn't that much more so I think I'll go that route.

Thinking about this a little further I don't think the actual tunnel diameter matters in this case. The repair shop said they needed it to size the replacement, but the BP1200 fits in a 250mm diam tunnel and has a thrust of 120Kg. A replacement Sidethrust model that fit in a 215mm tunnel (SE130) has a thrust of 130Kg. I could go up to the SE170 with 170Kg thrust that fits in a 250mm tunnel but that would probably be overkill for the 450 Voyager. So if I select the SE130 it will undoubtedly fit within the existing tunnel.

Contact Imtra, they'll know the tunnel size of the QL you have as they've been dealing with QL retrofits for years. They'll put together a system based on your vessel and current thruster. I've been through this with them several times over the years.

Did you notice the difference in thrust (150kg for the Vetus vs 120kg for the BP1200)?

In my opinion, most thrusters I've seen and dealt with are undersized. I'd go with the most powerful that will fit in the space you have to work with. :-D
