Auxiliary Fuel Tank

Postby lshuback » October 12th, 2020, 11:56 am

Hi ! I have a 1998 Carver 405 , it has two (2) 150 gallon gas tanks and one (1) 40 gallon reserve. I’m wondering if anyone is familiar on what needs to be done in order to transfer fuel from reserve to main tanks . There is a valve and is currently in the position shown in my photos. The previous owner wasn’t familiar so I’m hopeful someone here might be able to assist. Thanks very much!

Is your boat gas or diesel ? Your pics just look like those are the valves that you control where the engines get their fuel from. You sure about the tank sizes ?
The above is strictly my opinion.

Hello. The boat is Gas powered. Yes , I am sure of the tank sizes. I also have a switch on my breaker box , it’s labeled Pump Fuel Transfer

I have a 1997 405.i can probably help. There are 2 aux tanks under the swim platform. There should be 2 selector valves on the aft engine wall. These will change what tanks the main engines pull from. The valve you are showing is the exact valve my genset has for the mid tanks in the engine room for its port or stbd source. Is the valve just aft if the genset? There is no way to move fuel around with just selecting it and using the fuel in the tank. The breaker panel switch is for a diesel boat and is not used in our gas boats. Also you should have 330 gallon fuel total. I know my 2 aft tanks are 70 gallons each and the main tanks are 95 or so each. I believe yours are the same.

The reason I asked,my 405 has crusader xli tbi 454s have a supply line and a return line back to the fuel tank that is selected. If you have the same blue engines then you'll know why you see more fuel lines to the aft selector valves that i believe you'll see.. Also outside on the port side of the boat aft by the rear cleat there will be fuel fills. Easy way to know your aft gas tank situation is to note 1 or 2 deck fills there. I really think you will find the 4 tanks as I mentioned above on a 405.
