3807 both Transmissions stuck in reverse

Postby Matt1989Carver3807 » June 8th, 2020, 7:19 pm

Hello,
looking for a little help,,( 1989 3807 Aft Cabin) I was underway yesterday i got about 1000 feet from the dock and when I shifted into neutral, then reverse, both motors were stayed in reverse - the levers shifted fine but but transmissions remained in reverse. even when I put the levers in neutral it stayed in reverse. dropped my hook and had to get towed in. any suggestions.... ? it weird that both transmissions did this at the same time.

Make sure the shifter cables are actually moving the shift levers on the transmissions first, maybe something came loose ....have you had any work done lately on the boat ?
The above is strictly my opinion.

I agree, the odds of both units failing at exactly the same time are remote. I wonder if they temporarily disconnected the cables and didn't set them back in properly though I can't imagine why they'd disconnect based on the work you described.

Hopefully it's something simple. It would be very odd for both transmissions to fail with the same issue at the same time. In 2016 my port side transmission got stuck in forward which was fortunate for me as I could still use the engine to get home on. In my case it was fuse clutches and I needed to have the transmission rebuilt.

I still think your situation is something more simple.

I'm wondering if it could be something in the Morse control, like a pivot support common to both cables.

(maybe I should have said "helm control"... as I don't know if his are actually made by Morse!)

Any update to this? Curious as to what you might have found so far.

Doubt this is your problem, but its a good reminder of things to check while your down there. My port engine would not go in forward. Found the plastic piece that holds both cables onto the shifter had come off. Its held on with a "C" some people call them an "E" clip that snaps in a groove on the stud to keep the shifter cables on the post. The groove is so shallow, then E clip pops off from time to time. Found it in the bilge under the engine. Easy fix, but something I check frequently now.
