When and where to use 3M 4200 and 5200
Need help identifying which caulking to use on boat. I am hoping someone can give guidelines on when to use the different 3M products. Per 3M 5200 is for permanent bonding. ie bonding hull components together. To me that would be factory use. Anything I would be bonding would have to be disassembled and 4200 would be used. Do I have this right? I have been told 5200 can pull gelcoat from fiberglass base before releasing. Dan

That's correct. The 5200 is permanent and will rip off gel if you try to simply pry it off. I've had success using heat to soften it up first but it depends on the application. 4200 is not as aggressive and is easier to remove.
