Installing Flooring in Carver Mariner

Back in my early days I had a Bayliner 3450 Avanti and went through what you guys are going through now, albeit on a smaller scale (sq ft wise). I glued down sheets of 1/4 plywood onto the floor that had the previous glue/staples and uneven surfaces. I used PL Premium to glue it down, worked perfect. I then laid normal hardwood down untop of the new plywood floor.

Thanks for all the ideas and pictures. I'm going to remove the carpet and prep the area the best I can. I want glue down some sort of vinyl flooring without any trim pieces around the hatches. A nice clean look. I'm not sure what pattern of flooring to use. My walls are wood and I don't want to add a wood design to the floor that will compete with the other wood in the boat. I was thinking of going with a textured vinyl in a neutral color. I found something I like at the Box stores. I'm not sure that it can be glued down. Any suggestions on what to use? This is a Photoshop sample of what I was thinking of using.

Quick question for the group. Has any one added heated flooring under the vinyl flooring? Just curious.

Maybe align the squares to the length of floor...if that makes since?
Around here, I couldn't do dark..as its usually already dark here...

I will post some pictures of what I done over the weekend for same project. I used vinyl planks from Lumber Liquidators, using LVT adhesive from home depot. Worked well for me. There are many hatches on mine, and did not want to use anything around. I'll post how and what I did with some pictures next week.

Stark carpets will make you a custom design to fit the area. You can draw the image/design you want and they will make it up for you. I've seen some pretty cool boat designs, and actually have a custom Stark carpet in the salon on the Splashy Lady. I will see if I have any pics and post something.

Unfortunately I have some more work done before I can say its done, so will hold off on pics until maybe next week. But here is one that's shows nearly done. Looks pretty good actually. in a week or two, it is scheduled to be complete, I will let you know the details how I did it. Until then, basically removed carpeting, cleaned up old adhesive much as possible, but too lazy, so not completely. But I tried to make it even surface as possible. Also added thin strips of plywood around hatches and openings to make the gaps small as possible. Because as you remove carpeting, it leave about 1/4 to 1/2 inch gaps. I tried to glue and screw in the strips to flooring first, where hatches against hatches, I glued and screwed to hatches. minimizing the 2 hatches that are used most often. Then I started cutting and laying down. As I got over hatches, marked and drew on plank where the hatch openings were (make sure to make it accurate). Once the entire area was done, I used a 4.5 inch circular hand saw with 4.5 plywood/laminate head. Made it deep as the plywood and plank combination (my planks were about 1/4 inches). I then cut through the lines leaving corners intact. Then slowly removed the planks, but taped the ones over the hatch so they stayed together (did not want to mix them up). Also at this time using jigsaw I cut the corners, since I could not get to corners with circular saw without going over the corner. Then started using lvt adhesive and putting planks back on, and as I got over the hatch lines, I glued the hatches in place. Adjusting everything as I go along before the adhesive cured. I placed heavy things to keep it from moving about. Anyway sweat and tears, result looks great. No more old carpet smell, and looks very modern. Because of the jigsaw and circular saw head only making about 1/8 inch gap, does not require anything around the hatch. Also key is to cut around hatches while it is on the floor before gluing at same time so you have straight lines. You can cut after gluing also, but if your lines moved, that would be a problem. But if you are super accurate that would work as well. stand by for more detailed pics in a week or two...

What are you using for flooring and glue???

I've checked with several flooring manufactures. They do not recommend installing their laminate flooring in a boat because it is not climate controlled. Has anyone had issues with installed flooring warping or releasing from heat of cold?

I used "CLS Sandbridge Oak EVP 5mm" from Lumber Liquidators. So far it seems to be holding well. I used an LVT adhesive from Home Depot. Again seems to be holding well. 5mm is thick enough, don't think it will warp as it is fairly thick and heavy. One guy I spoke to when I called them said officially they do not say it is for marine use, but he said he did it himself and off the record would not be an issue. I will update if problems occur with summer heat, etc... as time goes.
