Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
I hAve a 405 the oem ac in mine and I think yours is a marine air here's a link to the passport control which is your thermostat I bet. Read down in it you will find various settings and mode adjustments. You will notice it can be set for auto changeover, heat only and cool only. You may need to go into program and see what it is set for. Also you may want to verify there is no pressure or safety located close to the compressor that may have tripped from high head pressure. i.e. low water flow. I'm not sure if this one has it without looking at mine but generally they would throw a code hpf on the thermostat display.

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Update...checked on the Operation mode on the Thermostat. It appeared to be set to "Cooling". Just to be sure (and to teach myself something new), I performed a factory reset, per the manual. I then reset to "Cooling". Unfortunately, this did not not resolve the issue. I notice there was a "buzz"and then a "click" sound coming from the air conditioner when it was trying to start up.
Spoke with a slip mate who agreed to help (over some drinks, of course!) We checked water flow again. He thought there should be more pressure in the water flow coming out of the air conditioner. We decided to flush the line. There was a good deal of gunk that came out of the line, and we were able to increase the flow.
Unfortunately, this did not correct the issue either.
We then moved the couch and then removed the panel to the AC. We determined the compressor was responsible for the "Buzz and Click" sound. It was very hot to the touch. We wondered if there was a safety that was preventing it from turning on.
We put a fan on the compressor to cool it down. After about an hour (and several drinks later) we called it a night.
He provided me with a Marine AC repairman's number. Looks like DIY just became WAC (Write A Check)

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Update:
Checked the Operating Mode on the Thermostat...all appears to be OK.
With the help of a slip mate (and rum), we flushed the outtake line.
We took a look at the unit itself...the compressor was hot to the touch. There was a buzzing and clicking sound coming from the unit when we turned it on. We tried to cool the compressor down with a fan.
None of these steps worked.
It appears that DIY has once again become DIP (Do It Professionally)

Thanks for posting.....well you can take something away from this, rum helps with troubleshooting, you know where all this stuff is now, the manual has been found and read...you are way ahead of most.....good luck with the repair, maybe something small.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Thank you for the post as I just purchased a 98 405 myself but it will be a couple weeks before I get it home. I am learning a lot just from reading post such as yours.
Thanks again Ken

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
I am having a problem with my A/C too. When I launched this year and I flick on the breakers for the A/C the blower motor comes on but nothing else. I've done all I can. Have a pro coming to the boat later today to see if it can be fixed of if I have to bite the bullet and get a new unit. Hoping for something simple.

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Problem is our units get old and to be honest with you the newer ones are so much quieter and colder and efficient they become a fantastic upgrade. Had a nice unit on the previous boat, spent close to $1000 to have the compressor replaced and this was with me removing the unit and bringing it in to the repair facility not to mention I also reinstalled it. Not long after the fan gave up. At that point I decided to replace it realizing everything else on the unit was probably going to fail simply because it had served its time. Point is it is not worth repairing when we are talking compressor replacement.
I installed a Marin Aire which I can personally vouch for as being a rock solid unit and probably has the best after sales service I have ever seen. I have 3 new units waiting to be installed on my Carver which will happen in the next month or so. https://www.marinaire.com

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Welp...the verdict is in. The compressor is shot and the whole unit needs to be replaced. Apparently there had been evidence of a prior freon refill, so the compressor cannot be replaced.
The quote for the replacement came in at $3200.
I am looking for a second opinion, but it appears this the guy who quoted me is the only show in town.
@Midnightsun , A friend already recommended marineair...I will most likely go that route. He said he was able to complete the install himself in an afternoon.

Marine Air and Marin Aire are 2 different companies.
Yep, done this a couple of times, quite simple. Only the ductwork may need to be adapted but pretty straight forward if you are a DIY kinda person.

Re: 405 Aft Cabin AC Issues
Ha! I think I replaced a MarineAir with a MarinAir.
Just to update...I was able to replace the AC on my own. I only had to make a couple "Phone-A-Friends". The directions were not intended to my level of DIY, but I was able to muddle through.
