Stateroom 12v Ceiling Fan

Post by Midnightsun »

I have had small fans in the past which were easily installed because the cave was small. The challenge here in a large stateroom was to install a 12vdc fan. Don't laugh but I picked up a mini ceiling fan that can be hung from a hook. Intend to hang it only when required which would be when on the hook and no AC. Unit was a whopping $12 :-O Bottom line is I do have it now and did try it at home. Blows a nice amount of air which should be just about right over the bed and really really quiet. Thought it may interest someone else. https://www.amazon.com/Sunlar-Ceiling-Outdoor-Camping-Battery/dp/B07141KCP2

it actually looks pretty "cool". My fear would be an unintended hair cut if I got up to pee during the night!

I can't imagine using a ceiling fan with the limited headroom we already have.

Comes with two extra super awesome blades in case you break one getting up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
I like it, I bet with a little creativity someone could make a pretty cool install with it.

It would be kinda cool to hang one from a bracket off the radar arch over the aft deck for those hot dead-calm August days!! ;)

OK, so I tried it this weekend. Very pleased, gives off a nice breeze. Used a small vinyl coated mug hook as can be seen. The spotlights are mounted to a small piece of plywood which makes for a good solid connection when screwing in the hook.

This will give you an idea how small it is and quite frankly fits perfectly where I put it. Just got to figure out how to make an invisible 12v connection under the roof liner. :banghead: I will only have it hanging in place when required otherwise it will be stowed. Heck even my wife said she liked it. :-O

Just to add to this. I tried an in-line LED dimmer like this. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Inline-LED-Dimm ... .l4275.c10

Glad to report I now can vary the speed and turn it on or off with this switch. Basically turns it into a variable speed fan.

how many stateroom lights in your berth? if only 1 right by your hook? if theres room you could get power from that light fixture and install a small power connection and a miniture toggle to the side of the fixture to control light bulb and when using the fan flip off the power to light bulb so you could use your fan. even a dpdt swtich you could use both at the same time, it surely cant take that much current so wiring could be kept small . might help with trying to take down a headliner or snake it through panels etc. dont know anything about your boat but since theres power very close it sure would be nice to use it. i am glad to hear the fan works i have considered getting one after your post.

That was my initial idea however there are 3 lights all controlled by a single wall switch. Getting to the wiring to modify it it would be even worse than trying to fish a new line. Since I will only hang it when needed, I have elected to install a small 12v plug behind one of the curtains so it is out of sight and will also hide the dimmer mounted with HD velcro. May do it this weekend and will post some pictures.
