Fresh Water Pump

Well it seems our fresh water pump decided to crap out while winterizing our water system. Pump is presently a ShurFlo 2088-423-344 Diaphragm Pump. 2.8gpm, 12volt, 7.5max, 45psi, built 04/1999. Before I buy the same pump again, was wondering if anyone would recommend a upgrade unit and for what reason. Now mind you I have not double checked supply flow to the pump or taken the inlet filter apart and see if its possibly clogged since I have the system full of -50 Marine/RV antifreeze. Looking forward to all your suggestions!

My thoughts are if the pump has failed and it is original and it has lasted from 1999 to 2018 why not replace with the same model. The original lasted 18+ years why mess with success. Just a thought.

There has really been no great advancement in pumps except for the newer variable speed on demand pumps out there. That being said, the variable pumps have been very unreliable! Stick with what you have IMHO, maybe up grade the flow by purchasing a larger unit if required.

The pump label says 04/1999, however it looks like the pump has been removed, repaired and reinstalled because it is apparent its not completely installed or mounted as it should be as an OEM installation. I believe a previous owner may have repaired it 6 years ago if my memory serves me right. Looking at the cost of the repair parts kits for these pumps, might just as well buy a new complete pump. I agree with your opinions, if it worked that long stick with it.

Pretty sure that model is discontinued though it's likely there is a similar replacement. Hans is right about the electronic pumps. I've replaced a few of them though all the ones I've replaced under warranty are still working two years later so perhaps improvements have been made. Having said that, it seems that when a hardware design incorporates a circuit board, that's usually the part that fails sooner than expected. The design provides a couple of benefits but one has to wonder if it's worth it.

Careful when considering going with a higher capacity pump. You must ensure that the existing wiring/circuit is rated for the extra load usually associated with a higher volume unit.

If the motor still runs but it's not pumping, sometimes it's a simple as taking it all apart and cleaning out the valves and reassembling.

That's the plan km, of course no shut offs on any of the lines so going to have to find some line plugs so all the rv antifreeze doesn't run all over the place. Thanks all.

The fresh water pump on my 355 went out and a local marine mechanic suggested replacing it with a size larger. He said I'd get better water pressure and flow. Well, I did as he suggested, and did get better pressure. However, I continually had issues with the pump pulsing on and off when the system was not in use. It was so annoying I ended up replacing the replacement with a pump identical to the original. No problems!

Good tip for folks, thanks.......You may have had a small leak that only showed itself at the higher pressure, was fine at the lower original pressure.......

Cycling on/off when not in use can only happen if the pressure drops as in a leak or the unit sensor is defective or the check valve has a small leak. It is not the larger output that caused this.
