Replacing Bomar deck hatch

The forward deck hatch on my 1987 3607 (in the V-berth) needs to be replaced; the parts person at Marquis gave me a Bomar p/n that Bomar/Pompanette does not recognize and cannot offer a suitable replacement. I really don’t want to cut a larger opening to accommodate the next size larger hatch but am not finding a replacement of any of the common brands (Lewmar, etc.) that call for the same hole size — which I measure to be 20 1/2” square. I’d like to use a lewmar Ocean or something similar if possible. Does anyone have a suggested replacement? Thanks.

Check the hatch itself there should be a sticker with the identification. I was able to find the exact replacement at Great Lakes Skipper which in my case was a Jim Black for a little over $200 which is rather inexpensive talking boat stuff.

I'll be interested to see what you find out. I have the same boat, but a few years older (83). I have resealed the top once when it developed a leak around the glazing. What is the problem with yours?

I'm surprised Bomar/Pompanette couldn't suggest a replacement, as they can supply replacement parts for all the hatches on the boat (or at least they used to). You'd think they could cross it to something current in their production.

Thanks Hans but no sticker or marking of any kind. Maybe there’s one on the outer vertical piece that fits through the hole but I haven’t actually disassembled the existing hatch yet. Hopefully the mfg. would put the ID sticker/label on a visible portion of the frame and not buried where it cannot be seen unless removed from its installed position.

The latch assemblies have given up the fight and they cannot be repaired/replaced, and thus I cannot get a decent seal when the hatch is closed but not snugged down a bit.

You can get new seal material. I replaced all mine on the portlights (same vendor) and they seal up real nice. Didn't take a lot of work either.

Are the latch assemblies broken? I have broken latches on the two smaller ones that I need to address somehow, but unless I'm taking water over the cabin or putting a hose right on them they don't leak.

If you do take your old one out, then take some pictures!! I haven't taken mine out but have been meaning to take it off an re-bed it and check the coring around it.

FM28 - You may want to call Carver again and double check that part number. The parts person could have misread the number. The latch assemblies should be replaceable to give you the snug fit you need. The hatch gasket does not have to come from Bomar, there are options that any good marine store could help you with. Take a pic of the latch and channel for the hatch and post that. You may be able use a Taylor Made latch, or there are some replacement latches made by SeaDog that fit a variety of hatches. Finally, send an email to jbroder@marquisyachts.com with your hull number. He is in customer service and can check the vessels actual construction log for your hatch info. His first name is Jeff. Very helpful, and dependable. I would only suggest removal of the frame as a last ditch effort. The fiberglass there is cored, so a tight seal may be difficult to get without gooping it up with a lot of sealer. Good luck.

Double check with Carver before you go any further and confirm the part number is a Bomar one. Sometimes they'll give a Carver number which won't mean anything to the supplier. Did you try sending Bomar/Pompanette a pic and measurements?
