Did you look at the 405, and if so do you have any interest? If so think about an offer that would allow you to pay your brokers commission. Or demand to speak with the owner.
Its really sad they wont split. Its very unfair to the owner of the boat. Its been for sale for about 5 years. The owner is paying about 7k a year for in / out of water storage winterizing shrink wrap etc.
If they sell it today, the marina only gets 6900 commission max, so no reason for them to want to actually sell it.

Probably a good decision to walk away. Keep looking there's a boat out there waiting for you.

The search seems to be over! I just had my offer on a 1996 Silverton 402 Aft Cabin accepted. It has twin Cat 3116 diesels with 1645 hours. Boat appears clean, bilges dry and salon & galley clean. Now it's all about the survey, sea trial and mechanical inspection. Being new to boating and diesels any recommendations for a good, reputable Cat mechanic would be appreciated. From what I've read and found online a diesel survey is complicated. The latest issue of Passageway had an article that described testing before, during and after the Sea trial. :captain:

I strongly suggest getting a good Cat mechanic to go over those engines. There is a lot of controversy about the 3116. You might want to google them. A friend of mine bought a boat some years ago with them and a very good friend of his who is a Cat mechanic told him not to buy. He did and I can't tell you the long list of problems he had including replacing one.

I believe the 3116 problems are with the mechanical injection system. If you need to replace an injector its a 2 day job by someone that knows the 3116. Not just pull and replace.

What I heard, and I won't bet the rent on this...the 3116 was built in several different plants around the world. The blocks made in the French plant seemed to have a lot more problems than others. My buddy spent a whole lot of money on his before replacing one engine $$$$.

Spoke to my surveyor and he gave me the name of a Cat mechanic to contact. Some of the 3116s were built in a French plant and had a "soft block" that had all sorts of problems. I had come across a web site that talked about the 3116 soft block problem that said those 3116 had some kind of marking on the engine body that identified them. I thought that I had bookmarked the site but can't locate it again. The port engine on this Silverton was repaired/rebuilt 2 years ago because of valve problems and the starboard has the 1645 hours on it. Does anyone know the marking that I'm talking about?
