I've never done that but it should be something you have in writing as part of your purchase agreement otherwise they can do whatever they want. If the ownership was already transferred, and no stipulation as to condition, then the repairs are on them. I'd fight that if it were me. It's up to them to do their due diligence prior to agreeing on a trade-in value and taking possession, just like we do when we hire a surveyor.

I wouldn't think you'd be responsible unless you somehow misrepresented a condition.

You are not responsible unless your sales agreement states you will pay for any repairs. I really doubt it does.
The dealer is just trying to see if they can get you to pay.
I would tell them, sorry there is a problem, buts its not my boat any more, so not my problem.

You would think that they would have inspected the boat as part of the trade in process. No, I've never heard of a situation like yours. Keep us updated as things progress. Hope it works out OK for you.

Yes, it is typical. It is called the "let's call the previous owner and see if he will pay. We have nothing to lose, so what the heck?". If they did not catch it before the deal, too bad, so sad. Tell them they should just net it out of the profit you already paid them. 8-) er
