1998 Carver 355 Motoryacht

Post by nedmiles »

Hello, I am considering a 1998 Carver 355 Motoryacht as well as a 2002 346 Motoryacht. I had a question about hull construction. I assume the hull below the waterline is solid fiberglass and assume the decks/swim platform are fully cored. How about the side hulls on these models- cored or solid glass between the waterline and rub-rail? How about the stringers? I read elsewhere on this forum that Carver was moving to woodless stringers around this time.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome I have a 97 405. Bigger brother to the 355...Stringers are fiberglass as well as sides and hull. The swim platform is cored top and bottom and has a open space between the top and bottom make sure you check for any possible water damage on top of it if it has the dock box mounted as carver was a bit stingy in sealing this dockbox bolts to the swimplatform

Welcome aboard Ned. They stared manufacturing hollow stringers much earlier than that. Mine is an '89 and the stringers are hollow.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted.

Welcome to the forum....Carver always made a point in their construction explanations of saying no wood below the waterline in many of these models. Now they did use some type of composite products as glassed in stiffeners for the strut/ rudder mounts and in the engine bed stringers in the 2001 Mariner.....and if I remember right there was someone on here years ago that had good knowledge of the boat hull make ups based on the last number of the models eg 2897, 3396, some ended with an 8 etc....the 6 or 7 or 8 etc., would give you an idea of the construction or whether it was fully cored or not. Remember coring is not always a wood product but they still need to keep the boat weights with in reason....good luck with your search.

Someone may remember what the designations meant.......
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.
