First time Carver Owner
Hi everyone, I am a first time Carver owner, but not new to Carver's, as my Dads cousin, which would make him my second cousin, was the original owner and founder of Carver boats. So I have been around them since I was a little kid. I recently purchased a 1990 Carver Montego with 7.4s and love this boat. We live in Upper Michigan and most or all of our boating is on Lake Superior, and we often visit Isle Royal National park. The Carver Montego was first built in the 80s, I was fortunate enough to take a prototype to Isle Royal with the owner of Carver and my father and fell in love with that model when I was in my 20s. The prototype we took out then did not have a radar arch and was powered by 5.7s but was a great boat. My previous boat was a 1969 Marinette and it served us well. I come from a large boating family and most of my siblings own boats and are avid boaters. We are also avid fishermen and the Montego is a great fishing platform. I am looking forward to reading all your posts for helpful hints and I can be of help as I have been around boats, fixing, repairing, and restoring them my entire adult life. I am familiar with Carver's of the 80s and early 90s. Thanks.

on the older Carvers. Wally sold Carver in the late 90s, and he passed about two years ago at the ripe age of 93. We always had one to use.

Just an FYI…that would make you his first cousin, once removed. His children would be your second cousins.Miss Fire 2.0 wrote:Hi everyone, I am a first time Carver owner, but not new to Carver's, as my Dads cousin, which would make him my second cousin, was the original owner and founder of Carver boats.

Welcome aboard and great info!!
I would imagine that trip to Isle Royale would be a great trip, PROVIDING the weather was on your side!! Upcoming weather is probably much more of a concern there that it is for the 'Put-in-Bay' folks in Erie and even that can be treacherous on the bad days!

Re: First time Carver Owner
Thank you all for the great welcome. Yes weather forecasts are very important when crossing lake Superior. we made a trip over there on the 22nd, maiden voyage on my Montego. Was a great trip, the boat did very well, fuel stayed under 30 GPH running about 3200, 26 mph, stern quarter sea on trip out about 2 to 3 footers. It was a cold weekend as the water has not warmed up out there yet, 38 degrees. The warmest water we found was 46, in the bays and harbors. Fishing was ok but not like it usually is at the end of July. This boat was sitting for several years and was a project to get cleaned up and back in use, but all in all only a few minor issues on that trip. (i.e.)tighten packings on shafts, one fuel pump.( And yes I did put lots of hours on her before we made the trip). All said around 200 plus miles and 232 gallons of gas, of which I only put on 25 gallons at the island at 8.62per gallon you do not want to buy fuel there. One of my brothers running a 28 Carver Mariner craped a v drive about 14 miles off the light, so was a slow go on one engine for all of us as we stood by in case of other trouble. 8 mph, almost as long to go the 14miles as the whole trip out there. Its about 54 miles of open water 65 miles dock to dock.
