Carver 396 solon vents

Postby paulr » March 16th, 2025, 10:08 am

On my 2001 396 there are 3 ceiling vents on both sides of the solon ceiling. You can actually see light through one of them.
I assume they should be open to let out heat and moisture. Is my assumption correct?

I had the same question on my 366. They’re actually part of a positive ventilation and are designed to push fresh air into the salon while underway. I believe there are intakes under the eyebrow of the helm that catch the air and duct it back to the salon. If you’re seeing light, maybe a duct has come loose?

Here is a pic I just took of ours (2002 396) and it is clear that daylight can be seen through them - and it looks like a screen/mesh cover behind them. I don't see any indication of duct work, but it's hard to tell.

I, like you, assume they are to let fresh air in on a breezy day or underway - and let hot air out on a still day. And when it is cold outside we close them up. At least that has always been our philosophy on when to open/close them. Except on really hot days when running the AC units - we keep them closed. :-D

I have also wondered about these vents on my 2000 396 Aft Cabin. Has anyone removed these vents to see what is behind? I also see daylight through the vents on all six vents.

Are those able to be closed? I wouldn't want open vents when I'm using my ac or heat. But maybe that's just me.
