Yup that looks like that might do it....are both tanks giving you that stuff ??......I think I might save a good sample of that and take to an engine oil lab and find out what it is, unless you can tell......good thing you got that filter taking that out before anything else sees that.....

Probably after the fact now but after you put it back together, ventilate, run the engines, then check and double check for leaks.

ok... I am going to ask here
My boat has 350 mag mpi X2. The only fuel related filter I have changed is the separators. Are there more filters in the fuel system to change, inspect, and/or clean.
This is why I come here almost every day...... learn learn.
Cheers
Fraser

By the description, I suspect you have Mercs. If so, you won't have the filters mentioned above.

g36, I have a '98 355 with crusader 454 xli's with TBI's and I do not recall seeing a filter like that on my engines I'll be sure to double check though. I do remember the pancakes in the fuel lines and I have the canister type cartridge water separators. Mike

The material was black as charcoal. I grabbed a pinch and rolled it between my fingers. It disintegrated. Who knows where it came from. The previous owner told me a story about the gasket on the inspection cover (You can see it in the pic) started leaking fuel. He said the ethanol seemed to have eaten through the gasket. It could be some of that leftovers. Or it could be the hoses.
Thanks for the input. I am taking it out this evening and I’ll know if that fixed it!
After this I’ll be posting about a bad vacuum pump for the front head. It just runs and runs.. No suction. But I want to take it apart before asking too many questions. The last one to use that toilet was my 6 year old daughter. I think she broke it. I can’t even be mad..
Thanks,
Steven

Hi Mike the filter is right beside the tbi body. Its visible by removing the black plastic cover that covers the flame arrestor. There's also a shader valve that is used to relieve the pressure to change it and also used to check fuel pump pressure if needed

g36; I think my set up is different. I do not have a plastic cover covering my arrestor. My arrestor is at the end of a plastic tube! Mike

Hi Mike here's the setup for my 97 xli's. Like you say yours may differ.
