The metal block you're talking about that your wheel attaches to is the helm. It acts as the steering pump and a reservoir. Some systems have an additional reservoir that is a metal canister with a sight glass and gauge usually located at the stern of the vessel or in the engine bay and are pressurized with air. This type of system is filled at the remote reservoir. Here is an example:

This is a typical set up of a pressurized system, and might be the system you have:

The other system utilizes the helm pump only and does not have the additional reservoir. The knob at the top of the pump is where this type of system would be filled:

Found it. Same as yours on the port side wall underneath the port side aft cabin bed.

Hi guys
First carver owner, a 97 mariner 350. Going crazy trying to find the steering wheel reservoir in the engine bay. Anyone could include an image in their response is appreciated. I can't even find the schematic online. Its not in the owners manual either :banghead: :help:
Thanks

Welcome aboard. As I mentioned above, not all applications have the reservoir. Start at the steering ram/cylinder hooked up to the rudders and follow the hydraulic lines. The reservoir is typically close to the transom or in the engine bay. If you don't see one in that area before the lines head up to the bridge, then I suspect you don't have one. Another place to look would be under the helm but that's not a typical location. Hopefully someone with the same model will chime in.

Are you experiencing a steering problem?

Seems the link listed above is giving an error in 1997 you probably have a seastar system there won't be a reservoir per say the helm is pump and reservoir and will have a fill port If you look at 12 o'clock position at the top there will be a thumb screw fill port for adding fluid to the system do you have 2 steering stations or one? If 2 you would fill from the upper one

Did u check on the port side of the aft cabin berth? If you follow the lines from the rudder cylinder forward you may find it. Then again u may not have a pressurized unit and in that case u just fill at the helm.

If it's like my 83 3607, it's under the berth in the aft cabin, on the port side just forward of the stern. Lift the hatch that covers the aft part of the water tank and you should see it there.

I moved mine to the starboard side and put an accumulator for the potable water on the port side.
