Thank you, planning on living on the boat for the summers, as we live in Thailand in the winters, just waiting on the survey and motor checked out, if all is good, we are back to Thailand early march ,and when we get back in late May here we get to live on our boat, we are excited.

I think you need to have a leak down test done to find out why the compression is low..a good mechanic will know what that is and how to do it.....if it is because the rings are done all the valve jobs in the world won't help.....just a suggestion from one Canuck to another, good luck man.

I agree with bud37. A leakdown will tell you alot more about what is going on and what your options are for a fix.
Was it low compression on all cylinders? Was it done warm or cool? How many hours are on the motors? Is there any chance it could be due to faulty test equipment?

Did they say what the compression was (psi for each cylinder) or just low compression?
Low compression does not mean you just need the heads redone. It could be valves, valve seats, valve seals, head gaskets, rings, cylinder walls, pistons, or all of the above leaving just a plain wore out motor.

Or it could be they don't know how to do a compression check.
All plugs out, battery fully charged?
But no matter what, leakdown will tell you a lot more.
Do not fall in love with any boat, until it is yours. Buying with your heart will cost a lot of money.

"low compression" means nothing. They should be giving you real data; what the numbers are, and under what conditions they were arrived at. That info would help us form a more accurate opinion. The questions and points the guys listed above are all things that warrant consideration before drawing conclusions, there's much that will affect the true picture of what's really going on. If the numbers are unacceptable as apposed to "low" it's something that warrants further diagnosis before you pull the trigger on the purchase or you could be in for an extra expense that you weren't counting on and a fix that could be cutting into your first boating season.

FWIW, the compression readings on the 572s in PV read very low - 8:1 pistons and big cam. Not much time to compress anything. Make plenty of horsepower though.
Leakdown tells you what you want to know, well, or maybe not!

A 1989 Montego 32 factory brochettes would be lovely! Are you selling or giving them away?
