Green is usually for grounding or bonding system, it is also used for trim or tilt. Usually the green wire is for the down function. Is there a different colour tracer on the green wire?

Wire is solid green and the trim for the outdrive and trim tabs are totally separate systems on my boat. This wire is in the bundle with water temp sender, oil pressure sender, fuel pump, etc..

Are there any empty terminals on the alternator? Some used a green ground wire, and typically the connectors on alternators have boots.

Nope, too short to reach that far.

So I take it this is not the original engine but a repower instead?

Correct! My boat is a 1984 model that I got super cheap because it had a hole in the side of the block and not repairable, the engine I rebuilt came out of an 1986 model boat.

I can't think of anything else that wire would represent. Perhaps someone with an '86 will chime in. Can you post all the engine info such as serial number, model, spec number, etc. I'll be able to look for a diagram in about a week or two.

Thanks for your time and input. I think I'm just going to remove that wire from the harness. I checked the harness on the original engine and there's nothing there, so for my boat it is more than likely irrelevant.
