The first step will be the toughest to get through. After compounding, the Finesse will go on easy and bright. The wax should go down like buttering toast in 70 degree heat. Just time consuming, but you will enjoy the results. The key is temps, and don't rush. Just finished mine yesterday, hooray! er

Like a couple of you guys, I no longer have the gumption to do it myself. HOWEVER, neither do I want to pay the yard their price. So I brought in a guy that I know who does handiwork and he brought a helper. Cost me $350.00 for the job. Came out 'ok', not great. We all know the adage about wanting a job done right.
My question to you folks, when does one decide to 'compound' the boat? I use Collinite Cleaner and then Collinite Fleetwax paste. Lasts the entire season and then some. The boat was 'supposed' to have been compounded when I purchased it two years ago.., but who knows what they did?
So back to my question: How often do you guys go thru the compound/wax routine. Thanks

My boat was not waxed properly. The guy before me didn't have the same mentality as I when it came to cleaning. So, Mine is due, now. If washed and waxed every season, properly, compound would be every couple of years. The amount of compound depends on a lot of factors. When you wax and there is not that great shine, time to compound.

Agree with Pep. The environment your boat sits in is important. That, plus what level of compound used. Range from light to heavy duty. Oxidation rate is different everywhere. I am in direct sunlight, but there are no industrial smoke stacks around the marina. The garbage coming out of those stacks and getting in the air/rain can really do a number on the vessel. In areas of industry near the marina, I would do a light compound annually, at least on topsides. Wash down every visit. You could hire out the compounding process first, and then DIY polish/wax part. That would save some money, and body pain. $350 was really cheap for that job. Collinite is a good product, used it for last 10 years. Switched to Mequiar's just to try something else. Used the '50' one step and was really impressed with result. Laid it on pretty heavy and used a 10" orbital. The grime that came out was astonishing. Will see how long it hangs in there before a final rating. SHINE ON! er

I am in the save the gel coat camp, so the less you remove the better. I must be useless at it, but have never got a shine that was like original, even with the fancy buffer and wool pads/all different color foam etc.....the only ones I have seen that come close were wet sanded. Considering that.

They will be just cleaning and wax this year....

Then there those that just wax and wax and never use a cleaner, thus wax build up and then you will be wet compounding and sanding to get back to virgin gelcoat to wax. I seam to get a good job using a restorer wax or just a cleaner wax by 3M or other vendors comparable product. And then I've seen some great looking polymer wax jobs that seem to last quite along time. Ah, to each their own I say! All I do know for sure is we're going to hurt for a few days after we're done! Ouch! Pass the Advil and the Scotch please!

Went to the boat, pouring rain. At least we put in the new mattress and Oceanair for the forward hatch. Heading to the boat again today.

I am in the same "boat" as you. Not up to the task of doing it myself. It's not that I can't I just prefer to pay someone else to do it and watch them.
