Our shore potable water hose has a Y right before the filter. From the filter it goes into the boat's shore water connection. I turn the water off (on the Y leg going to the filter) when we leave the boat - one less source of water entering the boat. When we return I open the 'empty' leg of the Y and let the water flow until it drops in temperature, telling me the hose is 'clear' of all the standing water. Close the 'empty' leg and open the leg going to the filter.

The only water I drink on the boat is from a purchased bottle. However, I do use the potable water for showering, shaving, brushing, etc.
In home port, I do not hookup to the pedestal, however when traveling, I think the filter is a great idea.
Next year I am planning to use an inline filter whenever I bring water on board, whether traveling or filling up the tank. I saw lots of them in my travels.

I used to fill the tanks on the boat and use that water. Every trip to the boat would start with making sure the tanks were topped off, even if we were just spending the weekend at the dock in the marina.

A few years ago I changed to hook to city water through a filter. Wow. SOOO much more convenient, just in taking showers and doing dishes.

I'll drink the water and use it for cooking or coffee, but my significant other still uses bottled (or boxed) water to drink.

I MIGHT put a second taste/odor filter on just the line to the galley sink in the future (which would have benefits with either a city water or water tank supply), but the rest of the system would stay the same.
