Here is what should appear in your owner's manual. Should be about section 5.------- er
Because the generator draws fuel only from the starboard fuel tank, the fuel
levels in the tanks may become unequal. If this occurs, open the fuel equalization valves, located on the bottom near the aft center of each tank. When
the fuel levels are equal, close the valves.
Always close both fuel equalization valves when you are not equalizing
the fuel levels in the fuel tanks. If one of the valves developed a leak while
open and unattended, fuel could spill into the engine room undetected,
creating a hazardous condition

Which brought me to my original question, if the boat has a slight list (as many boats do), do they still equalize. Which I believe was answered, as in, no. They level would be a better description. The helpful irony is, while the genset draws from the starboard tank, my port engine burns at a slightly higher rate than the starboard.

If the boat has a list, the tank on the listed (lower) side would have the most fuel when equalized. This will cause the hull to list even further if it's enough fuel to make a difference.

BTW, it wouldn't be that big a deal to install a transfer pump, then you can control which way you want the fuel to go. The hardest part would be running the wiring.
