Trying to help you but we still don't have clarification on whether you are an inboard or sterndrive application. Which set up do you have, the ones in the first or second link in my post above?

Could be something as simple as a loose cable attachment or even a stretched cable. Did you compare the linkages on the port and stbd motors to see how their shifting setup compares?

I looked at the spec sheet for that 89, 32' Mariner....looks like it only comes one way, with inboards, if that is the case then it will be v drive, not sure if remote or not.

After a lot of digging and having someone look at it, the packing was all destroyed for both forward and reverse. The transmission was removed and rebuilt $1700 later. Thank you all for your responses.
