you could keep the battery switch on 1 or 2 but you should figure which is which battery is which. Both postion can be used as a back up to start if one bank gets drained but you wouldn't want it on both all the time. Depending on previous owners you need to sort it yourself or with someone rather than relying on the what was originally setup from carver cause it may have been changed around.

My battery selectors are either on or off, all three are in the on position.

Just out of curiosity what position is your battery selector dial on? 1, 2, or all?

Any properly wired battery charger should charge regardless of the battery selector.....having said that , the engine/engines should only charge the batteries that are selected by the switch position.

I've been out of touch for several days...but I'd been struggling with how this all works. This is what happened to me,
(since the OP question is taken care of, I don't feel I'm hijacking the thread)
1. Put the dial on "All", everything charged fine.
2. Put the dial on "Off", nothing charged, DC volts showed zero.
My interpretation of the dial was that if it was in the "Off" position that the batteries were charging and I was basically using that charged power for house lights etc.

What I discovered was this;
My battery charger when hooked to shore power does not have a separate switch on the AC panel for "Battery Charger."
The battery charger is hooked into one labeled "receptacle."

So, to your point...the battery will indeed charge regardless of the position (except for Off?) but the charger must be on to do so. LOL. I had inadvertently turned it off and didn't realize it. I'm still learning but maybe this little venture (post) will help another new owner.

If hooked up correctly at the selector switches, the charger should charge your batteries even if the selector switches are in the OFF position. If it doesn't, then the charge wires are hooked up to the load terminals of the switches instead of the source terminals. On the source side, it's a direct path to the batteries and the position of the switch doesn't matter. If the charge leads are connected directly to the batteries, again, the position of the switch doesn't matter, it'll still charge.
