This is our last trip and last weekend aboard. I just HATE winterizing in the cold. We have been running down the stored provisions, and will start bringing home things Sunday. We stayed most of the summer on board, and will miss it. Next week, I change oil in engines and genset, Winterize the genset (First time for me, but shouldn’t be a problem) and then the water systems. Then wait for call to bring up the Cape Cod canal to the Wareham river to its storage place. Hoping for a smooth ride, but Buzzards Bay can get angry in October.

The key to enjoying winterizing as opposed to hating it is to make some changes or add some hoses/fittings/pumps to your kit. Every time you do a certain item and it is even slightly difficult add a fitting or change something to make it a snap next season. It took me a few years but now everything is done easily with no swearing, no scraped knuckles and less time than before. Same goes for oil/filter changes, a reverso or home made reverso is a must on any boat in my book.

The Volvo diesels are a little more complex as they have dual oil filters, an air filter, a primary fuel filter and a crankcase breather filter. Then there are the secondary Racor filters and separators for each engine. I normally do all mechanical on 1 day close to haul out and leave the pink stuff after haul out since engines, genset and AC need pink as well as potable water system.

In case you're describing a problem or looking for parts re an issue in the future, it's the other way around Hans, the Racors are the primaries and the on-board engine filter is the secondary.

Funny you mention that since when I was typing I was questioning which was which. Makes sense since the fuel enters the Racors first (primary) and then (secondary) the engine mounted filter.

We have one more weekend trip up the WI shores of Lake MI in 2 weeks to enjoy the colors and that's it for the year. It will be my first time to put a boat in heated storage. I have a long list of projects to hold me through until spring.

Where I am at it costs $8,000 for winter storage. $4,000 for unheated and only $1,800 to keep it outside. There is no way I am paying 8k to keep a 35 y/o 3607 cozy.

Just to do a few small local trips to investigate, test, try and probably lengthen the list of ToDo's over winter. End of next month she's coming out again and put in a workshop to tick off that ToDo list over winter.

Past winters got less and less frost, no snow at all last year. Perhaps next year leave her in with some form of heating plus winterizing.
