Was going to try a check valve and double check the vented loop for proper operation. Thanks for all the ideas.

The most common cause for hydro-lock is from extended cranking without starting. Close the seacock if it doesn't start right away. Installation errors are number 2. The best exhaust installation explanation I have seen is Northern Lights "don't drown me". Google it to see. It has a lot of general information that applies to all brands. Kohler of course makes an installation manual with actual measurements and angles.

Never really had any hard start problems with her. Usually a couple of rotations and she fires right up. The new owner told me it almost always happens when anchored out in rough conditions. Today he ordered this check valve. https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=1656822
