I believe it is illegal to fire a flare unless in an emergency. I also am not sure where to dispose of outdated flares.

Anybody know, if the dial on a fire extinguisher shows in the "green", even if it is out dated, is it still good?

Not sure about the regulations in Canada, but in the USA they just added the expiration dates. So here, that extinguisher would not qualify towards your requirements. It's likely still good and could be on the boat, but you'd need the appropriate number of good qualifying ones besides that one to be "legal".

I've had several (over 10) old extinguishers that we used for practice for the kids once. All of them were in the 'green' or marginally close to green and all fired off perfectly fine when we were playing with them.

They definitely frown on that........check with your local power squadron if there is one up there, also the marina may have a out of date flare day. Sometimes we used to get permission on a certain day for the boaters to fire off their old flares.....gave them some experience in using different flares and the guns. We used to light the blast gas stacks with flares, always had to inform the harbour and CCG.

I just did a quick search "It is illegal to burn off expired flares, and they are not accepted at landfill sites, or by police or fire departments."

When I purchased my new ones last week, the guy at the store told me to bring the old ones in as they are used for training. Maybe you have a similar thing in your area?

We collect the expired flares from the public, and the local Coast Guard coordinates a training day for participants to practice firing flares under their supervision. I would suggest you contact any law enforcement agency near you, and ask if they want them. I also keep some expired flares on board. While they do not comply with regs, they still work most of the time if you need them. er

It's my understanding that you can keep expired flares onboard, but you are obviously required to carry new one too.
