Which raises the question why on earth drain plugs are a few mm while they could easily be made much larger so they drain in a firehose fashion kind of way. I mean there is no difference to the engine and its functioning wether a drain is 2 inches or 1/2 inch wide. A large opening when closed it is closed and when open it drops everything inside in a few seconds.

Funny.. I was thinking the same thing. Maybe not going as large as 2" (because that would probably be expensive) but maybe a size or two larger than what I typically see, which I think is 3/8 or 1/2".

Small openings aren't so bad, a larger opening would save you seconds or a minute at most. And if you ever have to chase the treads, which isn't that uncommon, there's a better chance of having a smaller size chase on hand than a large one, and I find it way easier to chase a small hole rather than a large one. Remember also that marine engines are born from the automotive world which seldom get drained. I also wonder whether there's a consideration about the number of large holes in the side of the block weakening the casting. Remember that you already have large casting holes there to begin with that are needed as part of the manufacturing process.
