I believe it is for the A/C pick-up.

It will be interesting to find out what it is really for.

Viper's comments about the genset make sense for it being "backwards", as that way it wouldn't force water into the genset if it's not running. However, even if there's air trapped in there the genset impeller could still pull water up through there. An HVAC pump could not do that if air got trapped in there and would need to be purged. Usually the HVAC ones are flat with a bunch of holes. A friend changed his to a scoop type facing forward because he was even having trouble with air getting in the HVAC line and having to purge it before he could use his A/C after going on a cruise He did that because the original flat type allowed air to get trapped in there. The scoop definitely eliminated that problem.

Simple...just look to see what it is attached to and follow the hose....

Given the sterndrive ( I/O ) application, you are correct. Engine cooling will draw in at the outdrive. That vent, facing backwards, is the generator cooling. Carver did not normally install a crown on the A/C pick up, because the filter is located near the A/C water pump. er
