Is it possible your boat has (or had) an inverter?

That might be a reason why someone might have used a "ship/shore" switch in the manner you describe. NOT as really a "ship or shore" source, but as an easy way to shut down high current devices if they were running on an inverter and re-enable them when the inverter was not in use.

Remember if this was done by a previous owner/mechanic etc, it is also possible they may have not used the correct color wiring, you will have to get an eyeball on the exact routing if possible......maybe do some continuity tests.

The boat never came with an inverter/charger, and the rotary switch is definitely OEM. The hot water breaker is at the bottom of the breaker panel and worked perfectly until I redid the wiring so that the incoming shore power goes directly to the inverter/charger and then feeds the breaker panel. For some reason I didn’t pay attention to the water heater wiring, so I’ll have to try and trace the water heater wiring from the heater to the panel. You all know what it’s like trying to trace boat wiring when there is only you, and the wiring just has to go through areas where you can’t see where it comes out. My arms just aren’t long enough to find the other end. I’m sure that I’ll find the wire’s tomorrow.

Got everything figured out once I had my thinking cap on right! Inverter is working as it should and hot water tank is making hot water. Hallelujah!

According to your post, apparently you once owned a 1989 Carver 4207, My wife and I currently own a 1988 Carver 4207, and need a wiring diagram for the boat. By chance, do you still have the wiring diagram for your 1989 Carver 4207, and if so, would you be willing to part with it? Please advise. Thanks!
