To me it sounds like the water pump impeller might be weak and needs to be replaced. If you have good water flow out the exhaust pipe then maybe the thermostat or the high temperature sensor might be bad.

I would suggest that when someone is looking for advice on a generator to post the exact model you have. I work on these for a living and each model has it's own quirks and issues. What may be great advice for one model may have nothing to do with a different model. Of course generic things like replace the impeller regularly apply to all.

Always best to provide as much information about the hardware as possible.

glazingguru wrote:Qr Bbpost Well, I figured it out and it wasnt that hard. HOWEVER, the damn thing still ran for a while and then shut itself off. I couldnt figure it out so I asked a mechanic to look at it. Come to find out, the wet muffler was shot and leaking into the bilge. The guy said it was even possible it could leak while not being run??? Anyway, I am replacing it and I hope that cures the problem with it shitting itself off because I suspect it was overheating.

I had the problem with the Benny shutting off last year on a Kohler 7.3E. Turned out, all it was, was that the oil level was low. Evidently, they don’t like being run with the oil low just a little.

Glazerguru, in ur original post u stated u shut the shore power off at the panel. The Panel mains have to be on in order to get electric from the generator. U should have a relay in the system that automatically switches from shore power supply to genny power supply. Or you can unplug the shore power to be sure. I just serviced our 1998 kohler genny and by the looks of things the impleller may have been changed once in 20 years. It was in bad shape. Fuel filter was original and I was unable to remove the anode pencil, all I got was the threaded brass end. That being said I try and run the genny every time we can with a load on it. U got to use it or u will lose it.

Keith S, I have a problem with the original generator of my 1987 42 Aft Carver. The model is Kohler 7.5R27, Spec 106276A. Aside from its vintage making it hard to find replacement parts, the generator starts but only keeps running if I exercise the fuel pump priming lever. I replaced the fuel pump with aTacit electric cube style pump, now it won't start at all.
Any suggestions?

The fuel is polarity sensitive. If it runs backwards it doesn't pump any fuel. Try switching the polarity.

I meant the fuel pump, not the fuel it self. :banghead:
