20 seconds is fine. The acceptable spec can be anywhere up to just over a minute depending on your system design if I remember correctly. As long as it doesn't cycle periodically when not in use, you're okay.

If you have the trannys I think you have, they are designed to work under heavy load equally well when turning either one way or the other.

I think so to.... designing a system that rattles on one side and not the other makes no sense to me...

i cant remember my rotations off hand on my 405 but there is likely a directional arrow sticker on top of the engines and transmissions that will indicate the directions or you can eyeball it of course. i know you havent reached a conclusion on the fuel or oil yet. i wondered about valve stem seals that may have shrunk allowing some oil to pass. i dont remember how long you have had the boat but after a season with it i bet youll know if its oil or gas by watching your oil level if your having to top it off. hoping you find a definite conclusion keeping my fingers crossed for you

For your vintage, both engines are left hand rotation. The tranny on the starboard side switches rotation to right hand.

Yea, my bad. I should have said "standard rotation"

OK...put it back together...remember redone injectors, fuel pressure regulator and a new PCV valve. Motor runs perfect......but the trans still rattles and the (oil or gas) is still in the exhaust. Took the boat out and ran it for about 6-7 minutes at 4000 rpm and it ran perfectly...idles perfect at about 850 rpm.

Next we are taking the oil cooler off for a pressure check (for leaks) and replacing the damper between the engine and the transmission.

We have about determined that the stain in the exhaust is oil not fuel. If the oil cooler isn't leaking then we'll do a valve job next fall after boating season. Opinions about waiting?

Anybody have a good reliable source for after market dampers?

Fortunately haven't spent a lot of money to this point and have eliminated quite a few things. I don't suppose valve jobs are cheap.

it doesnt take much oil to look bad on the water.it probably looks worse than it really is. why dont you run the boat some and get an idea of how much oil your actually having a issue with. just keep an eye on the oil levels. sounds like you do alot of boating like i do here in our state of tennessee. get out on the lake maybe a couple miles anchor up and float around with friends not like were travelling many miles every day. youll have a good idea by the end of the summer.
