Funny how things come full circle. The new top end Camaros, corvettes and challengers (500+ hp),(not sure about mustangs) all have the ability alter the exhaust note and bypass the mufflers all together in track mode.

denpooch wrote:QR_BBPOST Admiral Grew I very much agree with you. I was born in early 50's and do remember the 'muscle' cars that would cruise through the parking lots. I even seem to remember a car manufacturer (maybe Ponitac??) that provided a switch to bypass the muffler and make that great combustion sound.
I think of the lovely idling sound of my boat at the dock as the lost sound of the motorcycle that I never owned!
In all honesty I really love the sound of my twin 5.7's in my Carver when I fire them up. Being that this boat is a sedan and I am up on the bridge there is less noise up there than there was with my last boat. That boat was a Bayliner 3055 Ciera with twin 5.7's mated to Bravo II drives. It was an express style boat.
When I fire up the Carver it kind of brings me back to those old muscle car days even if my Carver only goes 25 MPH wide open.

Yea, my previous boat was a 1989 Wellcraft 34 express cruiser and she was LOUD. Previous owner named her 'Aftershock', probably for that reason. I remember when I had her out for the sea trial, the owner was concerned that the volume would turn me off. Little did he know!
Now of course I love the command bridge because I can enjoy conversation while underway.

There is nothing better IMO than the sound of tuned engines with some compression running thru headers etc.......BUT after more than 60 years of industry, hotrods, race cars etc, etc I now love the sound of silence, have no need to listen to a noisy pleasure boat with low compression engines for hours on end...the less I hear those engines under the back deck of our boat the better......just an old deaf guys two cents......
There is something about the sound when it accompanies an old antique wood cruiser though.

The sound of my Crusader's is just right for me. Not Loud, but that deep throaty growl that says "power, just throttle me up and get out of the way, I'm coming through". It's that hallmark Crusader sound. Mmm Mmmm good.
Rick - are you sure about that 25mph top end? I have the same engines, and I run 23-24 at 3400RPM. Another grand to go, so I'm sure I could get to 30-32. Must be the weight of that 65" TV holding you back.

I wish. 25 is it. My engines top out at 4000 RPM. At that setting I get 25 MPH. Can do a little better with a tail wind or a current pushing me. I have hit 27 MPH going downstream in the Detroit River. I am considering changing over to electronic ignition. Have been told that I might gain some more top end once that is done.

I used to like a little noise but now prefer silence which the Volvos do deliver. As for exhaust note, used to like Harley and V8 sounds but now they bother me. Kinda got used to smaller displacement 3 and 4 liter AMG exhaust notes.

With the mufflers on my boat the merc 454's can barely be heard. Its kind of amazing how quiet the exhaust is.
