Throttle cables stiff, but only when under way?

Postby drewp » April 23rd, 2023, 1:18 pm

1996 Carver Aft Cabin. My throttle cables are very stiff, both from the bridge and salon, but only under way. With the engines off they move great. I am looking into lubricating and even replacing, but want to see if anyone had this same experience first. Thank you all so much!

Have you watched the engines while underway to check for excessive movement ? Seems to me that if they are smooth when off the cables may be fine unless something is flexing.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.....

Is it original equipment or has there been an upgrade to fly-by-wire controls? Do your cables go from the engine all the way to the helm controls or do they hook up to a control box first? What engine package and shifters/controls do you have?

I do not believe the engines are moving much at all - I will confirm the next time I take the boat out. Thanks!

It is original equipment.
Unless the control box is behind the steering wheel cabinet, they go first to the helm controls, then a second line goes straight to the cockpit.
I have Crusader 350 xl engines - I will have to check on the shifters/controls later this week when I get back to the boat.
Thanks!

I wonder if there could be some tension on the cable when the shifter is in gear... maybe the two (four?) cables are tied together too tightly at some point?

I will look at that - all the cables are zip tied together, so it may not be readily apparent - thanks!
